A group of active Bryanston dads leave this morning on a five-day cycling trip to Durban.
Now in its fifth year, the Dads’ Charity Cycle Challenge primarily helps the Sunflower Fund, Fulton School for the Deaf, the Gauteng Down Syndrome Association (DSA), and The Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation. A portion will once again be channelled into the Dads’ Charity Challenge Bursary to assist with the education of a needy youngster.
To date the dads have raised R1,5-million and this year plan to take that tally to R2-million.
The five-day ride is spearheaded by Rob Jackson who initiated the Dad’s Charity Cycle Challenge in 2005. “From a modest start of R25 000 the charity pot has grown. Last year the dads managed to raise an incredible R500 000.
From an idea that was basically conceptualised over a few beers with some good friends on a Saturday morning, we have been overwhelmed with support and enthusiasm. In spite of the tough economic climate this year, everyone has pulled together and we believe our target of R2-million is achievable,” said Jackson.
On day one the team rides 145km to Standerton and on day two 134km to Newcastle. Day three presents a 165km ride to Estcourt followed by a 118km journey to Pietermaritzburg the next day. The final leg on October 18 is the 106km MTN Amashovashova from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, the oldest ‘classic’ cycle race in the country.
