Crawford Sandton pupils represented South Africa in the sixth annual International Maths and Science Olympiad in Indonesia.
John Luis, Advtech national subjects co-ordinator, said 18 children from various schools had to undergo selection rounds to take part in the Olympiad.
“It’s the first time that South Africa has taken part in the Maths and Science Olympiad. We chose three teams who first had to take part in tests such as concrete thinking, abstract thinking and verbal interaction,” he said.
The pupils, ranging from Grade 5 to 7 had to be narrowed down from 70 to 18 pupils.
“The pupils from Crawford in Sandton, Fourways, Lonehill, Pretoria and La Lucia, as well as those from Trinity, were coached in Maths and Science,” said Luis.
South Africa was one of 10 countries that participated in the Olympiad.
“There were supposed to be 16 countries but six had pulled out after earthquakes and tsunami’s hit Indonesia.”
Luis added that they would be taking part in next year’s Olympiad. “Next year we are doing much better.”
