Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport MEC Bheki Nkosi has made an appeal to other public transport service providers to increase their service in Johannesburg on Monday to mitigate the effects of the taxi strike.

Nkosi called on institutions such as Metrorail, Putco and others to make more train and private buses available to assist commuters going to work. “We are calling on Metrorail to make available more train coaches, including shuttle trains, on a more than regular frequency periods, especially in the early morning and late evening peak periods,” said Nkosi.

“We advice affected commuters to plan their trips early to cover for time inconvenience that may be experienced by this challenge.”

Departmental spokesman, Philemon Motshwaedi said, “While we recognise and respect the democratic right of the taxi industry to engage in a strike protest action, we expect them to recognise and respect the right of commuters travel to their various destinations safely and unhindered. Any acts of intimidation will be dealt with in terms of the law.”

Motshwaedi said all law enforcement agencies, including the police and Metro police, have raised the safety and security red flag and were gearing themselves in anticipation of possible sabotage activities aimed at rendering alternative public transport services ineffective.
